In 1500, the term "bulldog" first appeared in literature and it is believed that bulldog originated from British Isles. The peak of bulldog’s popularity in England was reached in 1800s and the name "bull" was used due to dog’s connection with bull baiting. When dog fighting was thought to be illegal in England, the fierce characteristics was eliminated. It was just in a few generations, the bulldog turned into one of the best physical specimens with an agreeable temperament.
