In 1807, a shipwreck occurred away the coast of Maryland when two puppies were saved heralded the Chesapeake. These two dogs and their descendants were crossed with other retrieving breeds and even local Coonhounds and then developed into powerful water dog with amazing skills of ducks retrieval from the icy waters from Chesapeake Bay. The breed was known as Chesapeake Bay Retrievers by the end of the 19th century and soon became popular with mid-western duck hunters.
