The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is a small to medium sized dog. The body is long and low to the ground with a deep chest, a level top line, and a high-set hairy tail carried like a saber. The head is domed with hanging ears, a large black nose with wide nostrils and large, dark oval eyes. The face is also adorned with shaggy eyebrows, a beard and a moustache. The coat consists of a short dense undercoat and a harsh topcoat, and the coloring tends to be white with any combination of markings.
Dating back to 16th-century France, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen was bred to hunt game across the rough and rocky terrain of western France. Many details of this breed are covered in its name: Petit (small), Basset (low to the ground), Griffon (rough-coated) and Vendeen (the French region where it originated).
