Most dog owners would agree that the Skye is an incredibly cute dog. But don't let its size deceive you. They are far more sturdier in their appearance. They have black nose, round-shaped brown eyes, erect or droopy ears, and sharp teeth. The dog's entire face is usually covered with hair. Its long hair on the head and forehead acts as a shield for their eyes. They have double-coats, which protects them from either cold or warm weather. And they come in various colors such as gray, blue, silver, fawn , dove, or cream color. 3
Believed to be one of the oldest terrier breeds in Scotland. the Skye Terrier (aka Skye) was bred to hunt vermin on the Isle of Skye. And it has remained true some 400 years later. During the 19th century, this breed was one of the most popular terriers as they were being used as a working dog and as a pet of the nobility. There are numerous theory that surround the history of this breed. One theory states that the Skye Terrier was born out of the crossbreeding of Maltese dogs, which were brought by the survivors of a Spanish shipwreck near the Isle of Skye in the 17th century. However, an article written by John Caius decades before the shipwreck describes that the modern portrait of the Skye Terrier already existed long before the arrival of the Malteses. Today, only 30 born in the UK back in 2005. This news didn't dwell with the officials as they see it that the breed is on a brink of extinction. They are now listed in the Vulnerable Native Breeds, and if the trend keeps up, they will completely disappear within 40 years.
