The Westie is compact, small shaggy dog. They have a button nose and small, erect ears that give them their cute and cuddly image. Their heads are shaped like a fox. But their distinguishable feature is their coat. The topcoat is a straight, hard hair, while the undercoat is soft and plentiful. Their coat moves free, straight, and easy.
Prior to their appearance in dog shows and events, the West Highland White Terrier, also known as Westie, were originally from Poltalloch, Scotland, where they were bred and maintained for more than hundred years. They were first shown at the Crufts in London in 1907. The American Kennel Club (AKC) officially recognized the breed in 1908 under the name Roseneath Terrier. The name was then changed to West Highland White Terrier on May 31, 1909.
